It is only in adventure that some people succeed in knowing themselves - in finding themselves." ~Andre Gide

I hope this will be a record for family, friends and my own memories of my trip to Guatemala, Summer 2011. While down here I am working on my Spanish and looking forward to the immersion in the language!

I'm excited about the adventures that await! July 10, 2011-August 8, 2011

Last Friday

So last friday we took a trip to Chicabal.

http://www.xplorandoguatemala.com/volcanes/laguna-de-chicabal-en-quetzaltenango.htm

But it was a very interesting experience! We left the bus and walked for about 20 mins up hill.... we were all huffing and puffing by the time we got to the ENTRANCE of the park! So it was a good little walk to show us how out of shape we were! We still had about 2.5 more hours to go...

One of the girls had been feeling sick and so we asked if there was a way to ride up to the top. One of the men who runs the entrance said he could take her. Being that she was wasn´t feeling well I offered to ride up with her. That was an adventure! We got in the cab and as we were driving about 10 other guatemalan high school or college kids asked if they could ride up in the back... la palangana... so we start up.

Well lets say it started out a little rough! I was pure dirt road... and def. muddy at this point. We only made it so far before we weren´t going anywhere! He could get it to go back, side ways everyway but up and he was turning the wheel like crazy. Some of the boys got out to push and that didn´t help either. Its hard to explain but I was slighly fearful that we were going straight into the trees and down the hill! He stopped the car and got out to put something down for traction but it didn´t help. He got up that spot but then was stopped again further up again by... el lodo... the dirt. I believe the term my teacher gave me was... atascarse???. So we let the group go on and we stayed down at the enterance... I was not getting back in the truck if you paid me!

So we waited for a few hours while they were painfully walking up to the top of the lagoon! But the same man who tried to drive us up to the top pulled out chairs so we could sit under the shop entrance away from the rain.

Because they were all very tired and some weren´t feeling very well we all rode in the back of his truck back to the bus. It was a perfectly fitting Guatemala experience back down the mountain!... en la palangana, I think?

Then upon arriving at our bus we discovered that Luis... the wonderful man who helps drive our bus through the crazy guatemalan streets was not with the bus. So we called him... and he was on his way back from xela.... way back from xela!... We were confused and getting wet. So one of the girls decided that it would definitly be possible to break into the bus... which is very possible. All you have to do is slide the windows open... and she hoped in and her feet stuck straight up in the air! I missed the perfect picture moment but we got in and we were able to sit in the bus while we waited for Luis to arrive about 10 minutes later... but I think the kids that watched must have thought we were crazy!

Friday night was the last night that Juan our host brother was going to be here.

So we watched some movies... something like vampire apocolypse... I don´t know!... dubbed in Spanish. And I played loteria... bingo... with Josua, the youngest.

Then we got ready to leave for our weekend trip early in the morning!... I´m running out of time again so I´ll write again soon... i hope!

Sorry if these blogs are really spastic!
