It is only in adventure that some people succeed in knowing themselves - in finding themselves." ~Andre Gide

I hope this will be a record for family, friends and my own memories of my trip to Guatemala, Summer 2011. While down here I am working on my Spanish and looking forward to the immersion in the language!

I'm excited about the adventures that await! July 10, 2011-August 8, 2011

El fin de semana

So Saturday morning we got up and drove with a large group of students to an area I believe is a little closer to the Coast. I believe the resort is called IRTRA. We can go because our school is a Private organization and so this is a benefit for those in the private sector... is the way I understand it... but you still have to pay... just discoutned price.

It was really nice, as good as any hotel I´ve stayed in. However, its interesting because checking in can take hours. So my group hung out by the pool and ate and I went down a water slide for the first time in years! There were 3 pools in this resort! It was also cool because at the pool bathrooms you could flush your toilet paper!... I hadn´t been able to do that for a week!

Then later the younger group of high schoolers played ultimate frisbee in the rain... which lead to a lot of muddy people!

When you finally get your room you have to call for someone to come and check off that everything is there and working and you have to do the same when you leave! Oh and the lights don´t work in the room unless you leave your key in this slide holder thing by the door and then the lights work... interesting concept.

That night we ate at the resort and then we went to the discoteca that is apart of resort. I will have to say that I think I will always prefer the discotecas. They play my spanish music! and the dances actually make more sense.

Then Sunday we went to Xocomil which is the water park. It was fun to be in a water park again! We had one lifeguard o salvavida... that told us that he could get us in for free... but we had another lifeguard who gave us directions when we were lost and then asked how you say stairs in ingles, we enjoyed the later of the conversations better!

After a good long day there we headed back to Xela... which is much cooler!

When we got back some of us went out to eat... since sunday our host families don´t have to cook for us. We got our buy one get one half off pizza. The power also went out in that part of the city for 5 or so minutes... but we enjoyed it because it was a cafe bar type place that already had candles on the tables!

The way back home was interesting though! Luis... mi hermano... had hurt his toe at the water park... we are hoping its not sprained. But he said we had to walk home slow... ok thats fine by me. Then as we are walking in the dark didn´t see one of the spots in the sidewalk that is broken of. Keep in mind this is the first time i have walked in the Xela streets in sandels but we had just gotten back from the water park. Slipping I cut my toe. I couldn´t tell what had happened but later in the light you could see it had been bleeding.

(This is not the spot where I cut my toe but it's one of my favorite examples!...
there aren't any other spots this bad)

So Luis and I both walked home limping and I hope we didn´t look like we had been drinking! But the last few days between the two of us we have been making good use of my first aid kit.

Getting back home we met our new Hermana... her name is patricia. Its pretty interesting though because she lives in cali out by Luis, but she has lived in WI, IA, and MN. She actually knew about Viroqua so I was excited!

That was the weekend!´... and I´m glad I finally got it written!
