It is only in adventure that some people succeed in knowing themselves - in finding themselves." ~Andre Gide

I hope this will be a record for family, friends and my own memories of my trip to Guatemala, Summer 2011. While down here I am working on my Spanish and looking forward to the immersion in the language!

I'm excited about the adventures that await! July 10, 2011-August 8, 2011

Where's the Spanish Section?

This morning I woke up in Guatemala City and now I'm home. Its kind of strange!

I went to the airport and got through all the customs. But when you cross into the terminal... you are still in Guatemala! Waiters come at you from all sides because they want to you dine in their restaurant... its like the people that want you to take their chicken bus!

I also almost bought a water until I heard the price... Q25??!!!???!!!... on the street I would pay Q3, in a restaurant: Q10 tops!... under principle I could not pay Q25 for a water. However if you had said $3.50 in an airport for water... I might have paid it. But a 8 times increase in Quetzales... I just couldn't take!

Also while I was in the airport... and since I've gotten back I have discovered that I am constantly converting between $ and Q! Its a habit that will take a while to break.

I'm also discovering that the whole world doesn't have Internet Cafes on practically every block... this will also take some getting used to! I could have used them in the airport!

Lastly, when I arrived in Atlanta a month ago I texted Elizabeth and said... "I can definitely tell that I'm in the Spanish section of the airport." Looking around I could tell the flights were to central america, puerto rico, south america etc. This time coming back into Atlanta I texted Elizabeth... "Remember the spanish section I told you about in Atlanta? I feel like I should go find it! I would feel more at home... who are these strange ppl with southern accents!" Not only do I have to get used to seeing so much blond hair and hearing so much english... but also being in the south!... I haven't been here in over 2 months!... Nathan told me if I had a problem with it I probably shouldn't come home!

Well now I have made it safe home and I will sleep in my own bed for the first time in a long time.

This will not be my last blog because I'm too tired to be sentimental and I need to write some nice things about Xela before I end this blog!

But I will say that it feels so weird to not be in Xela...

Until the morning
Raquelita
